Renovation, restoration and interior decoration of a building in Chania
The project concerns the renovation and interior decoration of a neoclassical building, which restored surface is 405 m2, dating 1932, in the capital of the island of Chania.
This old two-storey stone built house was built on an area about 670 m2 and it is enclosed by two main roads, and this leads to one side of the building to be on the street level, while the other side to be on the basement due to the inclination of the ground. At the same time, it is created a backyard with trees with two entrances one to each road.
In the first place the building was a private residence, while during the ages many interventions took place, especially on the interior spaces. The south (main) facade has two entrances, one on the square volume and a secondary on the lower on the east. This entrance is the most important and impressive of the building, because of the decoration of the frames and the molding made of gypsum all around and having three mock pillars. The two entrances are made out of wooden planks with decorative details. The level of the entrance is upper of the street level, signalizing the central entrance and reinforcing the symmetry of the view. The rest of the building sides remain simple.
The main goals of the architectural study were the designation of the architectural elements of the building and secondly the obvious interior dipole of the two levels through the morphology. A new staircase is added on the interior of the building connecting the two separated levels. Through the intervention, the basement and the upper level creates a clear dipolar character in order to can run independently.
More specific, the ground floor includes the all-day living spaces, an undivided space, with the living room – dining room – kitchen and the three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The basement includes also an undivided space with the living room – dining room – kitchen, two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a space to relax with indoor pool. The open plan all-day living spaces, makes a continuity to the outdoor space with the pool.
The upper level is designed with elements of the old main house and preserves the formal aesthetics. Some of them are the wooden floor, stuff with golden details, marble and leather are the main decorative principles. The furniture, the equipment and the decorative details –which are the contemporary elements– creates the feeling of contrast, which bridges the old times to nowadays.
The basement is converted into a space for relaxation, with references to vacation residences. The local architectural elements are combined with the contemporary design, in a relation of the arrangement of the floor plan and the materials which are used, where stone and wood are dominants. In that way, is created a residence into the urban environment, in harmony with the nature, combining the element of forged cement, natural wood, the stone walls and the Mediterranean plants.
