Cali Mykonos is situated in a unique location in Kalafatis, Mykonos. The hotel's construction has been designed to follow the natural flow of the terrain, with each of the 42 suites seamlessly integrated into the impressive natural landscape, creating a distinctive ambiance both indoors and outdoors, featuring private courtyards and pools. The hotel's signature is its central communal pool, stretching 125 meters and filled with saline water. The lighting study began with exploratory meetings and site visits to shape the initial lighting concept, blending understated luxury with sustainability, locality, and the characteristic Cycladic architectural style.
The exterior lighting incorporates discreet, low-intensity luminaires embedded in the walls and custom-length LED RGBW fixtures integrated into the marble structures, offering flexible lighting scenarios. Mushroom-shaped, discreetly illuminated fixtures were placed in the landscaping, providing subtle illumination without altering the beauty of the surroundings. Inside the suites, the lighting design includes trimless downlights, integrated reading lights, and custom uplighters, enhancing the marblematerials in the bathrooms. Overall, the lighting at Cali Mykonos maintains a subtle, low-scale intensity, creating a unique and luxurious atmosphere for its guests, while preserving the breathtaking view of the infinite blue sea. The two types of paths were carefully planned to achieve double the lighting intensity for the central road used by vehicles and carts compared to the footpaths, while keeping energy consumption at minimal levels. All luminaires are DALI dimmable and connected to sensors and photocells to maximize energy efficiency during nighttime hours.
The design and integration of this custom lighting system into the marble of the pool presented a unique challenge due to its significant length, construction method, lighting requirements, and environmental conditions. To overcome these challenges, an extremely durable system was selected, resistant to salt, chlorine, UV, chemicals and high temperatures, suitable for underwater use with an IP68 rating. Custom lengths and terminations were used to ensure a continuous, visually uninterrupted 125-meter-long light line, maintaining a consistent intensity of 600 lm/m throughout. To achieve maximum flexibility in lighting scenarios, RGBW LED lights controlled via the dimmable DMX protocol were employed, allowing the pool to be illuminated in various colors, both static and dynamic, for different events, such as parties, weddings, corporate gatherings, etc.
The outdoor environment lighting is complemented by discreetly installed 50-70 cm tall "mushroom" fixtures, blending harmoniously with the plantings and offering a soft downward light with only 1.5W LED source at a 1.5-meter radius, ensuring non-intrusive lighting that doesn't compete with the idyllic landscape. Each suite was individually designed, both inside and outside, with lighting hidden and integrated into the architectural elements, highlighting special materials and textures.
Architectural lighting in the rooms consists of trimless downlights, concealed reading lights in marble headboards, and trimless courtesy lights that provide subtle guidance to the bathroom during the evening. A distinctive feature is the custom uplighters placed within special stone structures integrated into the vertical marble surfaces of the rooms, offering a unique aesthetic touch while providing indirect lighting that softens contrasts. In the bathrooms, concealed linear lighting accents various marble materials. The decorative luminaires from renowned brands like Artemide, Panzeri, DGA, and Astro, mostly in white, black, and bronze tones, add warmth to the space and create the desired atmosphere of discreet luxury. All luminaires utilize cutting-edge LED technology with a high Color Rendering Index (CRI90+) and advanced optical systems to minimize glare while harmoniously combining color temperatures of 2700K and 3000K, depending on the application and materials, achieving a high-quality lighting
result.
The lighting transitions from warm tones (2700K) inside to cooler tones (3000K) for the external areas and plantings, while the pool area features a white light (4000K) for a brighter and more natural effect. In the reception, gym, restaurant and bars, the same design approach is followed, incorporating custom-made pendant luminaires. In the pergolas, all downlights feature double anti-glare protection with honeycomb and additional cylindrical covers for maximum visual comfort. IP65 waterproof rechargeable luminaires with dimmers and CRI90 lighting are used on the external tables and coffee tables, providing up to 300 lx at the maximum intensity on the table surface, ensuring pleasant, comfortable, and high quality lighting ideal for enjoying creative gastronomy.
At Cali Mykonos, the lighting design and supply service from PROLIGHT was chosen, ensuring accountability and supervision for the entire lighting project, and facilitating a swift completion within the desired budget, achieving a high-quality result befitting projects of this category.
