In the area of Mets in Athens, condensed in 150 sq.m., the design team of South Constructions + Design, with the help of their construction team, brought to life the concept of a new hotel era that introduces the maritime and agricultural history of Old Athens. The design of this project involved the transformation of a completely untapped space into a new era of accommodation. In less than 8 months, we studied, planned, and constructed a hybrid space, based on two main principles. The first was to achieve a low-cost implementation, while the second focused on providing maximum comfort and an unforgettable user experience, inspired by ship cabins.
The urban approach to the space, according to its location, Mets Athens, allowed us to combine different materials and elements, always prioritizing functionality of the concept. We chose best value for money, non-conventional materials to create an urban-industrial ambiance that is friendly and inviting, with an emphasis on interaction and experiential moments. As the visitor leaves their cabin, they're greeted with the sensation of a ship arriving on land. The corridor leads them to a half damaged wall adorned with scattered elements which reminds of Old Athens, elements they will come across during their exploration of Athens alleys . The ascent of the marble staircase just before exiting show the way into the urban landscape of Athens, now ready to explore and embrace the elements they encountered within the space.
This project was designed following the principles of the new contactless era, which is why the reception is discreetly presented. The facilities offer top-notch hospitality, while encouraging guests to venture out and explore Athens. Throughout the space, automated management systems enable efficient and remote control for the hotelier.
Textures and colors were chosen from palettes and samples of the 60s and 70s, including shades of blue for the sky and olive green. We even utilized an orange shade inspired by the primer used in shipbuilding. All elements are combined to be perceived by the visitor based on their individual experiences, but they all lead to one outcome: to imprint upon them the feeling of travel and the memory of the place that hosts them. Through these contrasting combinations, one can virtually transport themselves to an urban landscape of Athens or a ship's cabin. The characteristics of a ship's cabin, such as curves and round openings, which are iconic features of ships for practical reasons, played a significant role in the design.
Elements like the elevated bathroom, carpeted floor, low ceilings, room arrangements, and the alternative approach of a ship's engine room and an old Athenian olive mill in the reception, all contributed significantly to this simulation. Cabins_Sleeping has now come to life, introducing us to a new hotel era where the guest finds themselves in a hospitable and technologically advanced space, providing them with a sense of uniqueness in temporary accommodation.
