The study concerns the modernization and expansion of an existing hotel, part of which was demolished while an L-shaped building volume was retained and remodeled to join the operation of the new complex. The property is located within walking distance from the beach of Elia in Mykonos, on a plot with an area of 4,775m2. Despite the proximity of the property to the sea and due to its minimal slope and the existing buildings of the hotel complex, the view to the sea from the ground floor level is not provided unobstructed.
The aim of the design was to create an internal communal point of interest for the complex. A water core was created in the center of the hotel complex, an inner courtyard dominated by the swimming pool around which the common areas and suites develop. The spatial coherence of the extension with the existing section, the optimal operation of the hotel, the privacy of the rooms and the quality of the view were also attempted.
In the first building volume that one encounters approaching the complex from the side of the road is the reception area, from where the movements in the suites are shared through open paths, stairwells and semi-outdoor spaces. The hotel consists of 24 suites of various typologies, a reception area, a business center and communal areas of living areas, a spa, a gym and a bar. Most of the complex is developed in ground floor volumes, while 5 of the suites are located on the first floor and are accessed through 2 open stairwells.
Both the common areas and the rooms have view to the inner courtyard and the water core that constitutes a relaxation area with wooden decks, sunbeds, low sofas and a bar. The ground floor rooms of the new extension enjoy direct access to the pool from private courtyards. The upstairs rooms have access to private terraces overlooking the pool, the beach and the sea. The surface of the floors creates semi-outdoor spaces that function either as movement spaces or as living rooms for the suites on the ground floor. The access to the new buildings is accomplished perimetrically and externally and not from the side of the pool, in order to protect the privacy of the inner courtyard. Access to the existing rooms of the northeast building is via a sloping corridor separated from the pool level by planting flower beds. Olive trees, spruce and herbs delimit the spaces and enrich the hotel environment.
The new composition consists of stone and whitewahshed volumes. The external masonry is made either of white plaster without guides, or of uncoated stone from local stone, with recessed joint. The landscaping in the surrounding area is also done with elements of the natural environment -stone structures uncoated from local stone. The exterior yards and stairs with a coating of cement mortar.
Wooden pergolas with natural bamboo were designed, in order to provide privacy of the courtyards and natural shade. In some cases, tensile white tents were used. The frames are wooden in gray shade, while in those of the floor of the stone-built parts a frame (frame) is formed with a coating of cement mortar.
