The new Aliathon Ionian Hotel is created in an existing complex of bungalows, known as Aliathon Resort, and it’s located in the coastal area of Geroskipou in Paphos/Cyprus.
The existing tourist apartment’s language consist imitations of Greek traditional and neoclassical forms. Therefore, one of the main design challenges was to create a new hotel building with a more contemporary and authentic architectural language, which should be connected spatially and conceptually at the same time with the rest of the development.
An overscaled four-storey volume with traditional character, with a roof and a double-height arch, is decomposing in the center of the building and "breaks" gradually down to connect with the rest of the low-rise tourist village. Between traditional and modern volumes, large unified glazed surfaces are inserted (type Curtain-Wall) emphasizing the differentiation of old and new and unifying them, and balancing them with the reflections of nature and sky.
Many of the contemporary elements of the building reflect the traditional architecture and consists ‘translation’ of tradition with a contemporary architectural character. Such examples are the wooden cantilever balconies that ‘frame’ externally the area of the rooms and “hang” from the modern white volumes. Also, the "mushroom" canopies of the exterior landscape area reminiscence deconstructed traditional arches. In addition to this, the use of local stone reflects on traditional buildings as well and facilitates the connection with the materiality of the existing tourist village-resort.
Special emphasis was given to the surrounding landscape environment which was generated with computational and parametric design methods. Fluid forms are transforming to create paths that facilitate movement and human interaction around the landscape area of the Resort. Those paths and flows which are accentuated at night with hidden linear lighting, conform islands that incorporate green spaces, water features, outdoor restaurant seating areas with "mushroom" canopies and the swimming pools. The verandas of the ground floor rooms are attached on the swimming pools, conforming the touristic concept Swim-Up Suites. As a finish material for the pools, a special monolithic coating is used (sand colour) from the company Novamix.
The Lobby is marked externally with an oversized traditional arch which is located in the center of the building and its interior is created in a double height space, cladded with wood and ceramics from the companies Epifaniou Baths & Floors and Agathocleous Group. Lobby areas are directly connected to the restaurant and bar which are all equipped with furniture by Ergo Home Living Cyprus. For the restaurant buffet was used equipment from the company Europsyktiki Design and for the restaurant dining area hanging lights from Bright.Gr. The interior of the hotel rooms is characterized by a ribbed glass partition with metal frame which separates the sleeping area of parents and children, while furniture for the rooms are used from the company Re-Branding and hanging lights from Kourtis Lighting.
The hotel’s building position facilitates the unobstructed views from the rooms to the sea and the future extensions of the development. The construction of the project was undertaken by the contracting company Multipro Ltd and started in November 2017 and was completed in May 2019 with a break of 8 months in the touristic season of 2018, and the total construction cost was € 13. 000.000,00.
