Project Description
The COCO-Mat Hotel Nafsika II is the recently built extension of the existing COCO-MAT Nafsika Hotel in Kifissia, Athens. The Nafsika is characterised as ‘a microcosm of natural simplicity whilst the internal and external decoration is characterised by green luxury.
LightWorks. was appointed to design a low-energy and cost effective lighting scheme for the rooms, suites and circulation areas (corridors and main staircase) of the extension as well as to provide lighting solutions for the soft renovation of the lounge of the existing COCO-MAT Nafsika Hotel.
A 100% LED lighting scheme was introduced with carefully integrated light sources within the joinery and architectural details creating a space that is friendly, peaceful and atmospheric. All spaces throughout the hotel manifest an artistic mood with inspiration obviously derived from nature. An artistic synthesis with custom made minimalistic ceramic pots decorates the corridors whilst a few randomly chosen to become the general lighting of the corridors. The wooden tree trunks standing centrally at the staircase are highlighted with narrow light beams from above and the floating steps are outlined with seamlessly integrated linear lighting. Similarly, the rooms and suites are each a unique synthesis of natural materials and colours.
The lighting in the rooms provides drama and depth with carefully placed and concealed lighting that draws attention at the various interior details. Ambient lighting is mainly produced by indirect linear lighting integrated, either horizontally into the walls and either vertically backlighting a full-height corner offset, combined with a centrally located ceiling mounted decorative luminaire. Elements such as the minimalist backlit mirror and open dressing area also become lighting features contribute to depth perception and atmosphere.
The lighting scheme of the existing and recently renovated lounge of COCO-MAT Nafsika Hotel contributes to a relaxing and friendly atmosphere whilst working on a modest budget. General lighting is produced by a synthesis of custom made ceramic pendants combined with discreet surface mounted narrow beam spotlights over the tables.
The wooden shelves are accentuated with concealed linear lighting providing a stimulating and yet, adequate lighting to the self-service area of Honesty Bar. In addition, recessed linear lighting at the window sills creates an illuminated frame to the uplit trees outdoors, all together composing an attractive and welcoming view from both inside and outside.
